Free-range as they come, the hens are kept for the gorgeous eggs they produce for our own kitchen. And you really can’t have a farmyard without hens in it. |

However if you do want a fresh free-range chicken (or duck or Norfolk Black turkey) we can very strongly recommend Jason at Martin’s Farm in Hindolveston. They specialise in top class poultry. If you caught Galton Blackiston in the summer on BBC2 competing to cook for the Queen’s birthday then you will have seen Jason. Galton went there, along with the camera crew, to buy the best avian produce that he knew of. You can ring him on 01263 861241. Other wonderful low intensive meat producers in the village are Richard and Ann Day (01263 860578) - who also do a great veg box scheme locally as well as lamb, pork and bronze turkeys. And Frances Wingate (01263 860257) who can supply gorgeous rare breed lamb and beef as well as chickens and bronze turkeys. Both the Days and Frances are very small scale producers so it’s worth checking to see when they will have meat available - they won’t have it all the time, but it’s all the better for waiting! |
